Talk To Yourself Like Someone You Love
Be your own best friend and watch yourself soar!
I ran a half marathon this past weekend in Newport, RI.
When my body got tired the last few miles of the race, it was easy to beat myself up for not training even harder. I “knew” better.
I could easily have spiraled into negativity and victimhood.
Instead, I focused on what I could control in the moment, my breath.
I took slow deep breaths in and out of my nose as much as I could while running (I have been practicing nose breathing while running for months).
Then I showed up as my own best friend and coach incessantly until the end of the race.
My self-talk wasn’t perfect but it sounded something like this:
“You got this. 💪🏼 You trained for this. Just do your best. You are RESILIENT. 💚 You know how to move through discomfort. BREATHE. One step at a time. Take in the gorgeous views and enjoy the cooling effect of the wind. It’s just showing you how strong you are. You are rocking this. Goooo Melody. 🎉 You’ve done this many times before, you can do it again. Breathe slowly. Form check - Head up, find length in your spine, tap into lightness, smile. 😃 You’re almost there. You got this! 💕”
This positive self-talk and self-coaching was invaluable in helping me cross the finish line with greater ease.
Now that I’m not in the heat of the moment I can think of some even cooler things I’d like to tell myself next time, but this is what I came up with at the moment and it worked. It felt good.
What does your self-talk look like when things get tough at work or at home? Is it loving and nurturing OR is it hurtful and discouraging?
Notice and pay attention.
If this is something you struggle with, try imagining what your best friend would say to you in the moment and shower yourself with the same words! Or imagine what you’d say to someone you love and cherish in the same situation. Think about what words you like to hear and gift them to yourself today.
Practice, practice, practice.
