What Soundtracks Are You Playing?
What thought soundtracks are you choosing to play in your head? The most important conversations you have are the ones you have with yourself.
Any of these sound familiar?
I can’t do this.
I can take small steps.
I can do this.
I don’t have time for this goal.
I could make time for this goal.
I’m prioritizing this goal.
My colleagues must think I’m a failure.
Let them be wrong about me.
What others think of me is 100% about them.
I’m afraid I won’t know how to do it.
It’s possible that I could learn to do this.
I can take action with fear by my side.
I’m such an idiot.
I learn from my mistakes.
I am 100% lovable no matter what.
I’m terrible at following my schedule.
I’d like to learn to follow my schedule.
I’m committed to following my schedule.
I don’t have the skills.
I could learn a new skill.
My potential is limitless when I put my mind to it.
I have no chance. It’s all over.
What I make it mean is the worst that can happen.
I can see the gift and opportunity in this.
If you want a different outcome in life, change your soundtracks. Thoughts can be your best friend or foe. You get to choose which ones you play over and over. As writer Jon Acuff likes to say, which ones are you going to retire, replace or repeat?
When you’re trying to decide, ask yourself these questions:
Is it true?
Is it helpful?
Is it kind? (To myself and others.)
Our soundtracks rarely get better on their own, so take ownership and turn down the volume on the ones that sabotage your dreams and life goals, and turn up the volume on the ones that move you forward.
