How to Cultivate the Courage to Pursue Your Dreams

What would you like to achieve in 2021 but feel scared to do?

Are you held back by your fears, waiting around for them to magically disappear someday so you can manifest your dreams? Wish there was a courage pill so you could fast track the process? 😁

Luckily there is a solution: take action with fear by your side.

You don’t have to do it alone. I can help you.

Fear is rarely a valid reason for not taking action. (Trauma situations being an exception.)

Yes, there are instances where fear is there to serve you in a fight-or-flight situation like in a dark alley with a killer on the loose, but in most cases it is just holding you back from living out your full potential.

So, where in your life are you lacking the courage to follow through on your dream?

Are you looking to show up as your authentic self?

Would you like to switch careers?

Are you pursuing a work from home lifestyle that makes your heart sing?

The good news is courage can be cultivated. You don’t have to wait around for it to show up in your life.

Here are seven steps to get you started today:

1. Acknowledge your fear and the thoughts that are creating it.

One of the first steps in addressing your fear is recognizing that you have it and considering what you are really afraid of.

Make a list of everything you are afraid of and the thoughts that are creating them.

Try to determine if your fear is logical and whether it is holding you back in life. This exercise will reveal your mind to you and what you might want to work on.

2. Be compassionate with yourself.

Fear doesn’t mean anything has gone wrong. It just means that you’re a human wired for survival.

When you see your list of fears it might be tempting to critique yourself and compound your suffering with other negative judgements and shame. Instead, recognize you are human and wired to create fear in order to survive in the wild. It is part of what kept us alive for millennia.

It just doesn’t serve us as well in modern society.

Instead, commit to always having your own back and offering yourself self-compassion, kindness and love. It doesn’t mean you spoil yourself and let yourself off the hook. On the contrary, you respect your abilities like a best friend would and encourage yourself with love to take action even though you are experiencing fear.

3. Be willing to feel fear and any other emotions that come up.

Don’t be afraid to feel your feelings.

Fear is simply a vibration in your body caused by a thought you have. The minute you embrace the feeling of fear you gain power over it.

Notice where you feel it in your body. Is it in your shoulders, stomach, hands, head, etc? Try to describe how it feels to you. Is it soft or hard? Cold or hot? Breath into it.

Oftentimes the anticipation of fear is more painful than the experience of fear itself. Don’t resist or avoid it, let it all in. Once you do, you have little else to fear.

4. Choose to act with fear by your side. Make the commitment.

Decide that you are going to act with fear by your side and announce it to your community. Commit to it wholeheartedly. Invite others to support you. Boldly announce it on social media if that helps with accountability.

5. It’s okay to be vulnerable.

Sharing your fears and anxieties with others can make them seem less scary and help you take the leap. You’ll realize you aren’t alone and there is a community of others out there who empathize and feel the same way.

6. Make a plan for obstacles that might come up.

If it still feels hard to make the leap, brainstorm a list of obstacles that might come up and make a plan for how you will overcome them.

7. Be willing to fail, learn and try again.

Have a flexible mindset.Be open to failing over and over until you figure out the secret sauce to your own success.

The winning formula for anyone who has ever birthed something truly new and creative into the world is try, fail, learn and try again....more often than not with fear by their side the whole time. 😊
