Triggers Can Be Our Teachers
Do you have someone in your life that triggers and upsets you frequently? Someone that makes you want to scream, hiss or run away. Perhaps it’s a boss, colleague, parent, spouse or kid?
You love them, but damn, they get under your skin sometimes.
Next time you get triggered by one of them, ask yourself this question:
What is this person here to TEACH me?
What STRENGTH do I need to work on in order to activate my inner wisdom to best handle this situation?
For example, if your teenage son tests you with their attitude, maybe they are there to teach you patience and empathy.
Or perhaps your demanding and workaholic boss is there to help you learn how to set healthy boundaries and stand up for yourself.
Your critical spouse or parent is there to teach you how to weaken your own Judge and strengthen your own self-confidence.
These challenging relationships can be turned into a gift by converting them into an opportunity to learn and grow.
Every difficult person you meet can be your teacher in disguise if you allow them to be.
Instead of feeling anger, resentment or victimization, feel curiosity and gratitude towards your “teachers.” They are providing you with an opportunity to practice strengthening your mental muscles and accessing your sage powers. Thus, when you run into this challenge in the future, you’ll be in a stronger position to deal with it wisely.
So next time you see that person coming, pause, take a few deep inhales and exhales, and ask yourself “what is this person here to teach me?”
Like all things, it takes time. Give yourself some kindness and compassion while you practice and learn your new skill.
