3 Ways To Get Unstuck
I’m training for a half-marathon in a few months and following an audio training program on the Nike Run Club app. I can’t recommend their free audio training programming enough! It’s packed with great inspiration, motivation and guidance to help you become a better athlete and a better version of yourself after each run.
So much of what I’m learning around setting and achieving my fitness goals is applicable to my everyday life.
How many of you have set a big goal, then quickly gotten overwhelmed by the grandness of it and remained stuck? I think most of us can relate.
Running has reminded me of the importance of being kind and patient with myself as I work towards my end goal. But most importantly, it has highlighted the importance of these three tips:
1. Set a clear intention: What is your goal and why do you want to achieve it? Sometimes we don’t achieve our goal because we don’t have clarity on what we really want. It is just too vague. So be specific.
This is what I love about my half-marathon goal. I know the date, length, pace and reasons for training. It’s clear and specific.
2. Find your motivation and inspiration: Reflect on what motivates and inspires you. Make sure it is sustainable. Give yourself the best possible chance of meeting your goal.
My inspiration this year is training and running the half-marathon with my husband and kids. It’s a family affair. We’re all following the Nike Run Club app and hitting our daily and weekly goals together. It keeps me focused on the present and not overwhelmed with how I’m going to go from running 1 mile to 13 miles. We also integrated our love of travel by picking a race in a city we haven’t explored yet. Something to look forward to. And finally, I’m inspired to get back in shape so I can keep up with my kids on our outdoor adventures. All this keeps me motivated and inspired on a daily basis.
3. Celebrate each achievement along the way: Every goal ever achieved happened by taking one step at a time. So basically, each little step along the journey IS your goal. So celebrate it!
Once you’ve set your goal, hold it lightly, focus on the now and celebrate each step. As a result, you’ll experience less anxiety and stress, and be more energized.
I try to remember to celebrate every time I make it out the door with my running shoes, every mile I run and everything I do to stay healthy. They all add up to my grand goal. That is way more fun than fretting about what I have to do for the next 10 weeks.
Will we have doubts, anxiety, and fear along the way? Of course, it is normal. We’re all human.
Yet we often think that because we’re experiencing them we aren’t up to the task. It’s not true. On the contrary, noticing them means we are aware and awareness gives us a CHOICE.
Do we grab hold of those thoughts and emotions and buy into our stories of inadequacy and self-doubt? OR do we see them, smile, know that it is part of the human condition, let them go and continue on!?! I choose the latter.
Our potential is limitless and success isn’t achieved at some moment in the future. It is here, with each step.
So what goal in your life have you been stuck on lately? To get unstuck, set a clear intention, find your sustainable motivation, and celebrate each step you take along the way!
