Distractions - How to get rid of them!

Are distractions zapping your productivity?

Is your attention drawn like a magnet to social media or interrupted constantly by kids, colleagues or your cute puppy?

Constant digital and physical interruptions can kill your focus.

To be in creative flow you want your focus to be undivided for at least 90 minutes at a time.

In today’s day and age this takes practice.

Here are some practical tips to get you started:

1. Close all apps and notifications on your computer and phone, especially while working on a project that requires deep thought. Yes, that means notifications to email, social media and workflow apps.

2. Schedule timeframes on your calendar for the following:

  • Checking email, social media and workflow apps.

  • Uninterrupted focus time for 1.5-2 hours for important deep work.

  • Cleaning your desk, laundry, dirty dishes, interacting with kids, etc.

  • When family members cannot interrupt you unless it’s an emergency - don’t forget to define what an emergency is.

3.  If needed, let your colleagues know you only respond to emails and texts during certain timeframes as a productivity measure and that you aren’t ignoring their messages.

4.  Be ruthless with eliminating anything that is a distraction for you like background TV noise and grazing on food in the kitchen. Everyone has their own unique pet peeves. Tune into yours. (And when you can't because you don't have childcare for instance, give yourself a big juicy hug. You're doing your best! 💕 We've all been there.)

These types of measures will free up time on your calendar, allow you to take back control of your schedule, and regain the ability to focus on the tasks at hand from a place of calmness.

Consider your life: What digital and physical distractions abound in your life and how often do they interrupt your work? How would your focus and productivity improve if you only checked your email and social media three times a day? What physical distractions can you eliminate from your work day?
