Self-Doubt Is A Sign We Are Growing (Day 28 of 30)
Many of us think that there is something wrong with us when self-doubt rears its ugly head in our lives. It makes us question our capabilities, doubt our value and robs us of our dreams.
New flash: nothing could be further from the truth. Even the most successful people in the world struggle with self-doubt! (Take Serena Williams for instance! She is a world class tennis player but she still experiences self-doubt too.) It is a normal part of the human experience. The difference between those of us who move through it successfully and those who don’t is what we make it mean.
Many think that self-doubt means something has gone wrong in our lives or that we are inadequate. Also, some of us have this misguided perception that if we are following our calling in life that things should come easily to us and shouldn’t take so much effort. And thus when things get tough and self-doubt creeps in we give up on ourselves. But what if we saw self-doubt as a sign that we are on the right path?! That we are growing and evolving into the next best version of ourselves?! That we are challenging and stretching ourselves?! Then we wouldn’t have an escape route to give up on our goals when things get tough. No one said leveling-up is easy and comfortable.
Self-doubt is a choice, created by our thoughts. (See my earlier blog on how our thoughts create our feelings.) It is a natural reaction to growth by our brain that wants to keep us safe in our familiar cave. We can give into self-doubt and not ask more of ourselves, knowing that self-doubt will always invite us to quit and have a low opinion of ourselves. Or we can choose to move towards our future with intention and overcome self-doubt on our way to our goal because we know it just part of the process of growing.
Self-doubt will always be with us when we challenge ourselves. So we might as well plan for it and embrace it. It is part of the evolutionary process. There is nothing wrong with us. We are not inadequate. We are perfectly human. What is up to us is whether will we commit to getting really good at A) overcoming our self-doubt and taking action anyways or B) giving into it and letting our dreams slip away?
Which one are YOU going to get better at? 😉 I know which one I’m working on!
