Normalize Fear and Get Curious About It

I want to normalize fear a bit.

I’ve been working on various fears over the last few years in my personal and professional life.

Fear of deep black waters, fear of speaking my truth, fear of making big changes, fear of traveling during the pandemic, fear of failure in my business, etc.

I’m always a work in progress, learning and growing in this area. I won’t pretend to have all the answers. But one of the biggest and most helpful revelations I’ve had on this journey is that fear is NORMAL. It’s part of the human experience.

We all have our various manifestations of it and there is no benefit in compounding my fears by beating myself over the head for having them.

Shame, frustration or annoyance that I have a particular fear doesn’t make it any better. That realization and self-acceptance that I’m not flawed for having fears is a huge burden off my shoulders.

To feel that relief one has to not just understand this conceptually but really believe it in one’s bones.

It opens up the space for me to practice self-empathy and self-compassion around my fears. Which in turn allows me to actually look at my fears with curiosity, instead of resisting or burying them.

Resisting or burying those fears only allows them to grow or fester, and potentially manifest in other ways in my life.

Only when I really started to shine the light on them did I create the space to really start addressing them one by one.

I want this for you too.

So this week I invite you to make a list of the fears you might be carrying around in your body. Set aside any judgements you, your spouse, colleagues or culture have about them and just get curious about them.

Let me know what comes up for you. I’d love to know. I can help you hold a loving space for it.

In the coming weeks I’ll share ways to start making small steps towards moving through those fears. Stay tuned.
