Perfectionists: What are you afraid of?

Are you spending HOURS perfecting your PowerPoint presentation or cover letter? Running around town trying to pull together the perfect birthday party for your kid or spouse? Or making sure your house is spotless before your guests come over?

Could you be using your valuable time in a more productive way?

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

Perfectionism means you’re trying to be perfect so no one can judge you, reject you or point out that something you did is wrong.

The truth is people are going to judge and reject you no matter what you do - you can’t control what people think. People are going to think what they want.

Perfectionism is for scared people.

So how do we start to address our perfectionist tendencies?

  1. Be willing to be brave and be open to feeling any emotion. You can handle it. An emotion is a vibration in our bodies caused by a thought we have. Allow it to be there. It is normal to have emotions.

Notice how it feels in your body. Feel it but don’t react to it. It will be uncomfortable but you’ll be okay. You got this!

  2. Plan ahead, give yourself a time limit to produce the result you want, then honor it.  Show up for yourself because you are important. If you give yourself all day, you’ll take all day to produce your work.

Don’t allow yourself to say “I don’t know.” Plan to figure it out.

I’ve always loved Brooke Castillo’s advice that “you’re going to have to be willing to put your rough drafts out in the world... You need to be willing to do B- work sometimes.” It has helped me move forward on so many occasions when I’ve been stuck.
